Worthy of the gospel
Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Philippians 1:27Philippians 1 is a great chapter of the Bible. Paul writes about praying with joy and thankfulness believing that “he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (v6). Just when we are feeling blessed and encouraged, he hits us with the challenge of verse 27.
This season there have been well publicized incidents in the English Premier League where a substituted (millionaire) player has reacted to the coach’s decision to replace him by throwing his gloves down or kicking the water bottles. We all understand the tension and emotion that elite sport brings.
Remembering that we are Christ’s ambassadors and that we represent Him in our sport is a privilege – and a challenge. You have to work out what that looks like in your own situation.
Positive examples that I have observed include:
Making a point of smiling whatever the outcome;
Being humble in victory and gracious in defeat;
Taking time to thank the officials;
Caring for a disappointed opponent.
Be proactive when you next train or compete – whenever that is! Remember to act in a in a manner worthy of the gospel.
