"God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast and when I run, I feel his pleasure."

The Greatest

Return to the book list for titles beginning with 't'.

(The complete history of Manchester City), Gary James, Leicester: Polar Publishing, 1997

NB This is not a book review as such – rather, a summary of material on the Christian origins of the club.

The book refers to the building to St Mark’s Church in West Gorton in 1985 adding “the building of this church eventually led to the founding of Manchester City FC”. On the initiative of the vicar’s daughter – referred to only as Miss Connell – a working men’s club was set up in the late 1870s, wih a football team being formed in 1880. The first reported game was against Macclesfield Baptist Church on 13 November 1880 with St Marks losing 2-1. The connection with the church was lost when the club recruited players from outside the parish with the club re-named “West Gorton”. James Moores, church warden at St Mark’s, continued to play an active role in the club.
