The novel tells the story of a Christian student who plays as an amateur for a provincial Scottish League club which qualifies for the UEFA Cup and is drawn in every round but one to play in Eastern Europe, behind the Iron Curtain. He is persuaded to smuggle bibles into each communist country for distribution among local Christians, which leads to some adventures.
The book, 35 years on, is very dated and also very far-fetched and not believable.
