Bernard Whimpress, London, Carlton, 2017. ISBN: 978-1-78097-972-4

Published on the eve of the 2017-8 Ashes Series, the book starts with the quaint tale of the origins of cricket’s greatest rivalry. Every series from 1877 to 2015 is reviewed in an analytical narrative chapter without detailed match scorecards. In each chapter there is a profile of one or more great players from the series.

The book is well illustrated with contemporary images but what takes it to a higher level is the reproductions of old scorecards and documents, some paintings, drawings and cigarette cards from the years gone by.

Each section includes a feature on a related subject like the broadcasting of the Ashes, travel, written reporting etc noting how this has changed over the years.

This is a book that any cricket fan will enjoy reading or simply turning the pages and observing the pictures and illustrations.
