Sports outreach

Return to the book list for titles beginning with 's'.

Sports outreach, Principles and practice for successful sports ministry, Steve Connor, Christian Focus Publications, Tain, Scotland, 2003 (192 Pages - size A4) ISBN 1-85792-724-9

The book is a comprehensive manual on how to do sports ministry. The material is arranged in three sections:

Foundations of sports ministry

Principles of sports ministry Models of sports ministry

The theory and principles are helpful but it is the practical "How tos" that will be read and re-read by church leaders who want to reach out to the sportspeople in their community.

The 12 models which are developed practically include:

Church sports services

Specialist coaching clinics

Golf outreach events

5-a-side tournaments

Outreach banquets

School missions

Christian team and leagues

Sports camps

If the models are practical, the appendices are ultra-practical, giving you examples of how to word your invitation, how to organize your event and even the equipment you need.

The strongest point is that Steve Connor has hands on experience of implementing the models and goes from experience what can go wrong and how to avoid the pitfalls.

Bud Williams of Wheaton College says of the book, "Currently the most comprehensive manual to follow as a guide to doing effective sports ministry". I would not disagree.
