"I love the sense of satisfaction that I get when I’ve done a swimming workout or race, and know that I gave my whole being and heart to God in every moment of the swim. It’s the best worship I can offer him."

Penny Heyns

The Official MCC Ashes Treasures

Return to the book list for titles beginning with 't'.

Bernhard Whimpress, Carlton Books, 2010. ISBN 978-1-84732-634-8

It is hard to describe this book. Is it a book? Yes, but it is much more. It is a cross between a book and a scrap book. It charts the history of the Ashes, “the prize that began as a joke” to quote the title of the first chapter.

The development of the rivalry between England and Australia is charted through the key events and characters; WG Grace, Bodyline, Bradman, “Laker’s Manchester Miracle”, Lillee ‘n’ Thompson, Botham, Shane Warne. 2005 is rightly called “The best series ever” and finally the 2009 series.

The unique feature of the book, which brings things to life is the facsimiles and reproductions of original documents such as the Tour brochure from 1878 and the scorecards from 1882 and 1956, pages from the scorebooks for the 1882 and 1932-33 tests and some 1934 cigarette cards.

History comes alive as you handle copies of these historical documents. A great souvenir to have.
