“Knowing Christ is the best thing that has ever happened to me, although winning the US Open was a pretty good second.”

Sports and spirituality for devotionals (basketball)

Return to the book list for this category.

Dickie Hill, Meadville, Christian Faith Publishing, 2018. ISBN 978-1-64140-653-6

The book is designed to help the reader contemplate sports terminology from a Christian perspective, whether to spark interest in spiritual matters in the sports enthusiast or as a devotional guide for those interested in sport. While this book relates to basketball, others featuring other sports will follow.

The book consists of 30 individual meditations, starting from a situation in basketball and drawing from it spiritual principles, finishing with a list of 6-10 Bible verses for the reader to look up. Those used to a devotional starting with scripture and applying it to sport, will find the approach taken in this book is exactly the opposite.

Most sports devotional material that I have a read aims at helping the Christian player to integrate their faith into their sports experience. The approach here is rather to take a sports situation and draw out life principles from it.
