The message of Christ

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly. Colossians 3:16

There are so many deep thoughts in this passage from Colossians 3 that we have been looking at. Almost every phrase in the chapter is full of meaning.

The message of Christ is literally the word of Christ (Greek: logos) – the words spoken by Jesus during his life on earth and for us, the words recorded in the Bible. But how does God’s word dwell among us?

One possible way of translating the phrase is let the word of Christ make its home within you in all its richness. The idea is that we are to have a real awareness of the presence of Christ and that his words are to influence all that we do. It is a kind of living our lives in a spirit of “what would Jesus do?”

The full verse is: “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts”.

Now I have no more clue that you have how exactly you teach one another through Psalms and hymns. But I am sure the verse should challenge us not only to let God’s word live in us but to let it influence how we deal with others and to share with them what we are experiencing of God in our lives.

As you go to practice today remember that very word of Christ is living in you, setting your standards and influencing how you treat others.
