"Lord, I don't ask that I should win, but please, please don't let me finish behind Akabusi."

Innocent Egbunike's prayer at the 1988 Olympics

What’s your epitaph?

Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord…Asa’s heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life 1Kings 15:11, 14

A few years ago I was commissioned to interview a number of sportspeople for a project. One of the questions that I asked was, “How would you like to be remembered?” An interesting question! Here are a few answers

I would like to be remembered as a person that made a difference. I want to make history within what God has allowed me to do. Jose Edmilson, Barcelona and Brazil. World Cup Winner, Champions league winner.

The only way I want people to remember me is as a person who loved Jesus, a person who talked about Jesus. That is it! It is not important how they remember me as a footballer. The most important thing is that they remember me as a person who really wanted to show them that Jesus loved them. Oscar Ewolo, captain of Republic of Congo

I guess I’d like to be remembered as a person who loved God and followed after God, compassionate and a competitor. Allyson Felix, triple World Champion 200 metres

I would like to do something that will make a difference and whenever or whoever sees it or hears about it will have to glorify God, because when Paul was preaching to people he was telling them that whatever he is doing he is not doing it to glorify himself, he is doing it in order to glorify God. So whatever I am going to do, I just want to do it so that God be glorified. Catherine Ndereba, double World Champion Marathon.

I want to be remembered as one of God’s tools, His son, His servant who was born in Indonesia, with my family now, where I can do something with badminton. I want to be remembered for my achievements. I want to be remembered because I walk with our living God, Lord Jesus who has always stayed with me until now. I believe that all of my accomplishment are for His glory to be known in my life. Chandra Wijaya, Olympic gold medallist, badminton.

A journalist once asked Bernhard Langer, ‘What would you have as your epitaph?’ He replied, ‘It doesn’t make any difference what’s written on your gravestone. It’s only important that your soul’s going to heaven.’
