"God answers my prayers everywhere except on the golf-course."
Spur one another on
And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds. Hebrews 10:24One of the abiding memories of the 2014 athletics season was watching a lady who had just finished her race lingering trackside to shout encouragement to her husband as he ran his race. (Mischievously I asked her afterwards if I was lip-reading correctly: “If you don’t win, there will be trouble when you get home!”) In case you are worrying – he did win!
One of the great things about God’s plan of salvation is that it is a team-sport not an individual competition. We have team mates to encourage us and to “spur us on”. Everyone knows that when you are dead on your feet, it is such a help to have a training partner to run that final lung-busting lap with you.
And it is the same in the Christian life, we are not alone. We are to “spur one another on towards love and good deeds”. We are to help each other. In a way we are to push each other. In Romans 12:10 Paul writes of outdoing one another in good works.
As we live for Jesus in the world of sport today, let us look out for opportunities to encourage someone we come in contact with.
