"God answers my prayers everywhere except on the golf-course."

Billy Graham

The sower 1

A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed some fell on the path and the birds came and ate it up. Matthew 13:3,4

Jesus loved to teach by telling stories or parables as they are sometimes called. A parable just means a story with a meaning. Jesus told a story about a farmer – “A farmer went out to sow his seed”. In the rural area around Galilee this would have been a familiar scene to his listeners.

Jesus explains the meaning in verse 19: “when anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path”.

Many people in our world have some knowledge of Jesus and Christianity. Hearing the good news of Jesus is not enough, we have to believe it and take it seriously. If you hear the good news of Jesus, but do nothing about it, Jesus says, just like the way the birds come and eat seeds which fell on the path rather than the prepared field, so the devil will try to snatch away God’s word and stop you believing it.

It is easy feel the need for God on the day of competition more than other days. However, as we will see over the next few weeks, that is not how it works. God is not a good luck charm to make you run faster, jump higher or play better.

If God has spoken to you, act upon it. Don’t let the evil one distract you from taking on board God’s word.
