Psalm 92

Exalted

You, Lord, are forever exalted Psalm 92:8

The idea that God is exalted is often expressed in Scripture:
The LORD is high above all nations; His glory is above the heavens. (Psalm 113:4). Sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted. (Exodus 15:21)

My dictionary defines “exalted” as elevated in rank or dignity. God’s exaltedness is sometimes linked to his actions. The following verse in this Psalm (92:9) says “surely your enemies will perish”. Exodus 15 (quoted above) relates God’s exaltedness to the destruction of the Egyptians at the Red Sea. God’s exaltedness is active.

That God is exalted reminds us of our place. In Exodus 9 Pharaoh is condemned for exalting himself. It is a common human failing to want to exaggerate our own importance.

Sporting success can make us liable to pride and to exalt ourselves. The Psalm also speaks of God exalting us and the New Testament of us sharing in God’s victories. If, however, we humbly recognize our insignificance in relation to God, He will accept us and exalt us. Let us be careful to recognize that God is exalted forever and to know our place.
