"God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast and when I run, I feel his pleasure."

Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire

Knowledge

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 2 Peter 1:5

If you were to memorize Wikipedia you would have a lot of knowledge – but that is not what Peter is talking about. Michael Green suggests that the word for knowledge is close to wisdom and practical wisdom at that. It is not knowledge based on reading a book which would enable you to win a TV Mastermind answering questions on your specialist subject. It is knowledge which affects the way you behave. It is knowledge that you have gained and know how to apply.

I recently interviewed a very experienced middle distance runner. We talked about a championship race in which the interviewee had beaten a much younger runner who had arguably run a stronger race but got the tactics wrong. The interviewee was very gracious and said “I have one thing the younger runner does not have – experience”.

We need as much knowledge as we can yet. We acquire knowledge through reading the Bible and learning more about God. We also gain knowledge or experience through the practical exercise of goodness.

Then we need to use our Christian knowledge and experience to represent Jesus in the world in which we live.
