"Football is not a matter of life and death, it is more important than that."

Bill Shankly, Liverpool Football manager

Psalm 46

Be still, and know that I am God; Psalm 46:10

This is a hard command for those of us who like to be in control of our lives. What does God want us to do? Nothing! Just trust him.

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests. Luke 2:14 The words that the angels used to announce the birth of Jesus promised us peace. That is why Jesus came.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

And it was a special kind of peace. Not a superficial peace that money can buy but a peace that lasts forever. Someone has said that Jesus gives peace that the world cannot give and the world cannot take away. Notice too that peace takes away fear. I prayed with an athlete in Berlin on the morning of their semi-final. They were full of fear – fear of failure, fear of not running well. We prayed for God to take away the fear and give peace. Jesus said, Peace be with you! John 20:21 Several times in the gospels we read of Jesus greeting people with the word “peace”.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 We are not just have peace but to be filled with peace.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness. Galatians 5:22 Peace (and joy and patience) are part of the fruit of the spirit.

L et the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, Colossians 3:15 Peace is not just to be there is it to rule!

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. 2 Thessalonians 3:16 Why can God give peace – because it is who he is. He is the Lord of peace.
